Certain glass batch mix additions can add color to clear glass without compromising its strength. Iron oxide is used to tint the glass green; sulfur in various concentrations can turn the glass yellow, red, or black. Copper sulphate, for example, can turn it blue.

  • Toughened glass:

This glass is tempered, may have distortions, and has low visibility, but it breaks into small dice-like pieces at 3600 psi modulus of rupture. As a result, it is used to make fire resistant doors, among other things. They come in the same weight and thickness ranges as float glass.

  • Laminated glass:

Laminated glass is created by sandwiching glass panels within a protective layer. It is heavier than regular glass and may also cause optical distortions. It is durable, protects from UV rays (99%), and insulates sound by 50%. Used in glass facades, aquariums, bridges, stairwells, floor slabs, and other structures.

  • Shatterproof glass:

Shatterproof glass is created by incorporating a polyvinyl butyral layer. Even when broken, this type of glass does not produce sharp edges. Used in skylights, windows, flooring, and other applications.

  • Extra clean glass:

This type of glass is hydrophilic, meaning that water moves over it without leaving any marks, and photocatylitic, meaning that it is coated with Nanoparticles that attack and break down dirt, making it easier to clean and maintain.

  • Double Glazed Units: 

These are constructed with an air gap between two glass panes to reduce heat loss and gain. Normal glass can cause enormous heat gain and up to 30% heat loss of air conditioning energy. Green, energy-efficient glass can help to mitigate this impact.

  • Chromatic glass:

This type of glass can effectively control daylight and transparency. There are three types of glass available: photochromatic (light sensitive lamination on glass), thermochromatic (heat sensitive lamination on glass), and electrochromatic (light sensitive glass the transparency of which can be controlled by electricity switch.) It can be used in meeting rooms and intensive care units.
